I’ve been running a business here in Townsville as a sole trader for 8 years, trading as Mangrove Media, producing /directing /editing/ filming/ renting out gear.. supporting visiting productions in a myriad of ways, and ocassionally working as a soundie….

What sets me apart from the other people who will be applying for a job with you, is that I’ve been doing this for 20 years in a professional capacity, and have a solid track-record with credits and a lot of work to show. I’ve spent my career working as a Director of Photography on series and documentary features for Australian streaming platforms and television… Independently producing as a field-producer and Unit DoP for the likes of VICE, Netflix and the BBC… and creating short films for clients here locally in North Queensland such as AIMS, GBRMPA, JCU and many more.

My greatest strength lies in my ability to create engaging stories that have a human, emotional core. I don’t just make films, I help companies and organisations take a jumble of complex information and find the core message that needs to get out. I enter an interview having already identified the angle and story-points that will bring forth the emotion that will drive the film and keep the audience engaged.

The Northern Australian Marine Monitoring Alliance - AIMS

I had to digest an array of information / resources and raw footage from various sources, deduce through meeting with the client what the purpose of the video should be. I then crafted interview questions to ask AIMS and NAMMA representatives, and organised a day of interview shooting at AIMS to tie it all together. from 4 hours of interviews, using transcripts and a refined information processing workflow, I produced the following film. The 1 minute preview contains graphics which I have built from scratch in After Effects.

Signet came to me with access to this amazing story, and very vague ideas for a video-mini-series. I poured my heart and soul into helping them achieve something special within their limited budget. These films would have never got off the ground if I hadn’t been incredibly personally invested in making them happen. I approach all my films with the same commitment,

Finding the right filmmaker for our latest sponsorship project wasn't easy. With our subject matter on the other side of the country, an unpredictable schedule and very little notice before key moments unfolded, we needed someone we could trust completely. Jimmy proved to be exactly that.

From the outset, he took ownership of the production, handling everything from directing and filming to interviewing, audio, editing and managing with the people involved in our sponsorship. He travelled independently, captured events as they happened, and took the very limited direction we could give him and turned it into something that genuinely exceeded our expectations.

Ark Energy - Chillumbin Windfarm

The Chillumbin Wind Farm had been the victim of an online smear-campaign orchestrated by a very organised anti-renewables lobby peddling misinformation. The story below was an attempt to counter that misinformation, with a last-minute communications campaign. I spent two weeks sinking my head into the information provided by the client, and the counter-campaign, to help Ark Energy find the right words and angle to disprove the main arguments against the wind-farm,. I turned this around within 3.5 weeks, from the initial phone call to the uploading of the film.
